Liberty Half Eagles
1879 $5 MS66 PCGS. The Specie Resumption Act went into effect on the 1st of January, 1879, placing gold coins on par with paper currency for the first time since 1861. This eliminated the premium that gold coins carried and along with it the incentive to hoard them. Gold production at the Philadelphia Mint increased to supply banks with quantities of various denominations in anticipation of feverish public demand for gold coins. More than 300,000 half eagles were struck bearing the date 1879. This is one of the earliest With Motto issues that is usually collectible in Mint State, although it becomes conditionally rare in MS64 and finer. The present coin is tied with one other MS66 piece as the finest at PCGS; none are known this fine at NGC (3/17). The strike is bold, and the frosty tangerine-gold surfaces showcase exceptional eye appeal with no distracting abrasions.
