Indian Half Eagles
1911-D $5 MS62 PCGS. CAC. The 1911-D quarter eagle gets all of the press, but the 1911-D half eagle is demonstrably the rarer coin -- despite the slightly higher mintage. In terms of Mint State scarcity, the comparison is even more dramatic. Mint State grading events for the quarter eagle exceed those of the half eagle by more than 10 to 1. Some of the difference is a function of value and multiple submissions, but clearly the half eagle is by far the scarcer coin when Uncirculated.
This CAC-endorsed MS62 example is sharp and lustrous, with desirable orange-gold coloration and a strong strike. A few light marks are scattered about the high fields, but they require a glass to view. Pervasive, satiny mint luster covers both sides. Just 72,500 pieces were produced, third-lowest for the Indian half eagle series. PCGS reports just 56 pieces in a numerically finer grade (1/17).
