Early Eagles
1795 $10 13 Leaves, BD-1, High R.3 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. BD-1 is a plentiful variety among 1795 gold eagles, ideal for the type collector. According to John Dannreuther, "there were several production runs of this [die] combination..." It is believed that as many as 325 survivors could exist, although demand for early gold in general keeps high-end examples out of the hands of budget-restricted collectors. In such cases, well-circulated coins or impaired AU examples offer the casual type collector a more affordable option. This AU-level coin is sharply detailed, most notably on the eagle's breast and head. Tool marks are most easily seen in the left obverse field and on the reverse below the eagle's right (facing) wing, although a vigorous cleaning blends them into the bright patina.
