Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301 AU55 PCGS. Although not a true overdate, the 1853/'2' double eagle remains a highly popular Guide Book variety. The 1853 double eagle as a whole is rare in Uncirculated condition, and only a few such pieces are FS-301 coins. This Choice AU example displays a bold strike and partially lustrous orange-gold surfaces. Scattered light abrasions are present, but none are major detractions. This coin is in a late die state with the obverse lapped. The "overdate" feature is only partially visible, and the recutting on the 1 is effaced. However, the diagnostic rust lump below the R in LIBERTY is clearly seen.
