Liberty Double Eagles
1853/'2' $20 FS-301 AU58+ PCGS. CAC. This variety, discovered in the 1950s, and gaining popularity over the last three years, is now the topic of advanced discussion by double eagle specialists, some who feel it is a true 1853 over 2 variety, and others who admit that there is "something" under the 3. Proponents of the overdate variety argue that the artifact in the lower loop of the 3 is the diagonal part of a previous 2. Antagonists state that the position and direction of that artifact are all wrong for a previous 2. Regardless, the importance of the variety seems secure, and the present near-Mint example approaches the finest known. Both sides are minimally marked and exhibit frosty yellow-gold luster with delicate orange tendencies. An attractive and important example that is rarely found finer. Population: 21 in 58 (2 in 58+), 7 finer. CAC: 11 in 58, 5 finer (3/17).
