Liberty Double Eagles
1854-S $20 AU58 NGC. This issue was the first double eagle struck by the fledgling San Francisco Mint, and it is extremely popular with collectors as such. Coins that avoided loss at sea circulated extensively, making attractive, near-Mint examples challenging to find and in strong demand.
This lightly circulated example displays exceptionally smooth, natural surfaces with nearly a full amount of remaining mint luster. A few non-distracting abrasions are present as expected at this grade level, but none are individually bothersome or severe. Lime-green and honey-gold shadings visit the clean, yellow-gold fields surrounding boldly detailed devices. Apparently from an early state of the dies, with no die cracks visible on either side of this lustrous, original example.
