Liberty Double Eagles
1859 $20 AU58 PCGS. From a mintage of 43,517 coins, the 1859 double eagle is far from a common date. Most examples seen years ago were typically VF to XF. When the late David Akers conducted his famous study of auction appearances of double eagles, he noted that the average grade of auction appearances was only VF30. Today, the average certified grade of this issue is AU50. Akers called this issue one of his "pet" dates for the Type One double eagles. Although extensively marked, this near-Mint example has brilliant and frosty yellow-gold luster with traces of pink overtones. Population: 18 in 58 (1 in 58+), 3 finer (3/17).
