Liberty Double Eagles
1865 $20 MS63 PCGS. A sharply struck Civil War-era twenty with pleasing cartwheel luster and a very clean portrait. The reverse is also well preserved, and while the obverse field has a few luster grazes that are consistent with the grade, there are no distracting bagmarks. As is the rule for double eagles of this period, lightly circulated survivors can be found without substantial difficulty, but true Uncirculated pieces are scarce. This lustrous example is among the higher-end pieces at PCGS. The 18 in the date is noticeably repunched, although the recutting is not recorded in the Cherrypickers' reference. Population: 10 in 63, 5 finer (3/17).
