Liberty Double Eagles
1866-S $20 No Motto AU53 PCGS. The No Motto 1866-S double eagle is scarcer than its With Motto counterpart, coming from a mintage of only 120,000 coins. Surviving examples are usually heavily circulated, grading no finer than XF. Uncirculated pieces are major rarities. This AU representative displays original orange-gold patina with luster in the protected regions of the fields. Scattered abrasions on each side are consistent with the grade. Date collectors will need to acquire an example of the 1866-S No Motto double eagle, as no other mint produced the denomination that year without the motto IN GOD WE TRUST. We have handled a problem-free About Uncirculated coin on only 11 previous occasions. Population: 12 in 53, 16 finer (3/17).
