Liberty Double Eagles
1873-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1873-CC is the last of the inherently scarce early dates from the Carson City Mint. Double eagles of this year are decidedly rare in Mint State and only marginally available in AU. Only 22,410 pieces were struck, in contrast to more than 115,000 coins produced at Carson City in 1874. This was a date that circulated extensively in the Nevada Territory, explaining the high attrition rate.
The present example is well-detailed and shows moderate amounts of original mint luster in the protected regions of the fields. The straw-gold coloration is pleasing, and most of the surfaces show fewer abrasions than expected for a Carson City issue of this period. A few grazes near Liberty's nose are the only individually mentionable imperfections.
