Liberty Double Eagles
1874-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 4-A. The 1874-CC is the first readily available double eagle from the Carson City Mint, although it is still a rarity in Mint State. NGC has seen only 16 Uncirculated examples, and neither NGC nor PCGS has certified a piece finer than MS62 (3/17). However, there are enough AU58 coins on the market that collectors can cherrypick such a coin that possesses nearly as much luster as a heavily abraded Mint State piece but at a more accessible price point.
The present near-Mint coin displays thoroughly lustrous fields and original peach-gold coloration. A few scattered marks accompany the high-point friction that defines the grade, although the eye appeal is on par with that of most Uncirculated pieces known.
