Liberty Double Eagles
1874-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. The 1874-CC Liberty double eagle claims the second-highest mintage of the series, at 115,085 pieces. In addition, a number of coins came on the market in the 1990s, increasing the supply of collectible specimens considerably. As might be expected, the 1874-CC is not difficult to locate in circulated condition. However, few examples were saved by contemporary collectors, and the issue is quite elusive in high grade.
The coin offered here is an impressive near-Mint example, with just a trace of wear on the high points of the well-detailed design elements. The pleasing orange-gold surfaces retain much of their original mint luster and show the expected number of minor abrasions for the grade. Overall eye appeal is quite strong. NGC has graded only 16 numerically finer examples (3/17).
