Liberty Double Eagles
1878-CC $20 AU50 PCGS. Variety 1-A, the usual variety with a heavy vertical die scratch on Liberty's neck. The 1878-CC comes from a low mintage of 13,180 coins. Pieces that were not shipped overseas in the foreign trade circulated heavily, with many lost to attrition. In their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth write: "The 1878-CC double eagle is one of the rarest Carson City Mint issues." The bulk of the surviving population grades XF or lower, making this AU coin upper-end for the issue. Mint State examples are known but are prohibitively rare for most collectors. This piece displays bold detail and mostly smooth yellow-gold surfaces. Hints of luster remain in the protected regions of the fields.
