Liberty Double Eagles
1878-CC $20 AU55 NGC. CAC. Variety 1-A. A heavy vertical die scratch on Liberty's neck identifies this, the usually seen variety. The 1878-CC double eagle is a better date in the Carson City short set, coming from a mintage of only 13,180 pieces. Most examples are in XF condition or at least no better than the low AU grades. Choice AU or finer coins are scarce, and Mint State pieces are major rarities.
This AU55 example displays a sharp strike with just trivial wear over the high points of the devices. Beautiful orange-gold luster glows in the fields, and the high areas of the design elements show complementary olive-gold coloration. Light, scattered abrasions accompany the undeniably original patina. The CAC endorsement is a major benefit to this coin, as only four pieces in this grade and two finer have received such a distinction. Census: 45 in 55, 39 finer. CAC: 4 in 55, 2 finer (3/17).
