Liberty Double Eagles
1882-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-B. The 1882-CC double eagle was shipped to foreign countries in quantity as a trade coin in the 19th century, and in recent years many examples have returned to the numismatic market. However, the date remains elusive in Mint State, and most such pieces show heavy abrasions from being jostled frequently in foreign bank vaults. Coins grading finer than MS61 are rare.
This piece shows much smoother surfaces than usual for the grade. Handling marks on Liberty's cheek prevent a finer designation, although there are no major abrasions to distract from the soft, original mint luster. The strike is sharp, and eye appeal is outstanding. This may be the most attractive 1882-CC double eagle in an MS61 holder. Census: 28 in 61, 10 finer (3/17).
