Liberty Double Eagles
1885-CC $20 AU53 NGC. Variety 1-A. In their gold Encyclopedia, Garrett and Guth write of the 1885-CC twenty: "...it is one of the rarest Carson City double eagles struck in the 1880s." The mintage was only 9,450 coins, and a significant number of pieces were eventually shipped overseas via the foreign trade. Survivors of the overseas hoards represent most of the high-grade population of today -- which is fairly small compared to those of many other CC-mint twenties. The 1885-CC is decidedly rare in Mint State (and out of reach for most collectors), and even AU examples are challenging to acquire. This AU53 coin is sharply detailed and partially lustrous. Original straw-gold coloration includes a few small coppery allow spots on the central reverse. The coin is quite appealing for the grade.
