Liberty Double Eagles
1890-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. This piece is in an early die state with the eagle's tailfeathers intact and minor doubling visible along the top of TWENTY DOLLARS. The 1890-CC as a whole is a plentiful date among Carson City double eagles, even in Mint State. However, demand for Uncirculated coins with decent eye appeal makes them challenging to acquire. The typical piece grades MS62 or lower and is heavily abraded. This MS61 example is remarkably clean for the grade. There is an olive-colored contact point on the cheek, but the fields are devoid of serious distractions. The strike is sharp, and each side displays original straw-gold coloration. Eye appeal far surpasses expectations for the grade. NGC reports 59 finer examples, possibly counting resubmissions (3/17).
