Liberty Double Eagles
1892-CC $20 MS61 NGC. Variety 1-A. Thoroughly lustrous surfaces yield shades of peach, rose, and yellow-gold. The strike is sharp on the central devices but a trifle weak on several peripheral stars. A radiant cartwheel effect produces much of the visual merit of the coin. As the grade suggests, scattered abrasions appear on each side.
The 1892-CC is a plentiful date through AU condition but becomes elusive in Mint State. Only 27,265 pieces were struck, and many were exported in the foreign trade, receiving light friction or heavy abrasions before coming back to the numismatic market in recent years. This MS61 coin is more collectible than higher-grade pieces, of which NGC has seen only 47 (3/17).
