Liberty Double Eagles
1893-CC $20 MS62 PCGS. Variety 2-A. The 1893-CC double eagle is plentiful in circulated condition, but Mint State coins are elusive. The mintage of 18,402 pieces was partially divided into foreign trade coins, and such pieces have found their way back to the numismatic market in recent decades, making the final Carson City issue more collectible overall than it theoretically should be. However, what Mint State examples exist are mostly heavily abraded. Above MS62, the 1893-CC is decidedly rare. This MS62 coin is upper-end among the Mint State population and yet accessible by most Carson City double eagle collectors. The strike is sharp, and frosty yellow-gold luster rolls over each side. Grade-limiting abrasions are uncommonly minimal for this numeric designation. PCGS reports 23 finer representatives (3/17).
