High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 PCGS. Most collectors, and many non-collectors, are familiar with the reduced relief Saint-Gaudens design produced from 1907 through the end of the series in 1933. But many collectors and especially those who purchase the coins for a nominal amount over their intrinsic value are astonished when shown a High Relief. There is nothing quite like it in the U.S. coin series. Most likely this is because the designer, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, was the foremost sculptor of the late 19th century. And it was his sense of sculptural dimensionality that he sought to translate into coin form that resulted in the High Relief double eagles. This is an impressive piece for the grade with barely detectable marks in the obverse fields. The strike is strong throughout, and the deep golden color is accented by reddish patina surrounding the devices.
