High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS62 PCGS. One of the rumors that has rubbed off on High Reliefs is that they may have been presented to the flag officers, one admiral, three rear admirals, and 16 captains of the "Great White Fleet" that departed on a world tour beginning December 16, 1907. This number exactly matches the request Roosevelt made of Director Frank Leach on December 2. Or it could just be a coincidence. If they were given out to the officers it is interesting to speculate about these men carrying their coin around the world in the special envelope Roosevelt requested for each coin and what condition they would be in when the fleet returned. This is an example struck before the "finning" problem was solved in the Mint and shows a nearly complete wire rim around each side. The surfaces are even reddish-gold with a number of small contact marks. Fully struck, of course.
