High Relief Double Eagles
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. The earliest minted High Relief double eagles show a thin raised rim around part of the obverse that is clearly visible from about 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock on this example. Known today as a "wire rim" and called a "fin" in Mint records, the characteristic was eliminated through milling and planchet adjustments, and later pieces are described as "flat rim" coins. Each type is listed in the Guide Book, and many of today's collectors aspire to own both types. This Choice Mint State example has satiny orange surfaces with brilliant luster and excellent eye appeal. Here is an important opportunity for the advanced Saint-Gaudens collector.
