Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles
1920-S $20 AU53 PCGS. The 1920-S is every bit as scarce as the 1921, both of which owe much of their scarcity to the gold melts of the mid-1930s. Small quantities of the 1920-S were apparently released into circulation, as evidenced by a few handfuls of lightly worn pieces that are known today, but Mint State coins are equally elusive. Unlike those of the 1929 and later issues, the certified population of the 1920-S is not significantly weighted in favor of Mint State survivors; rather, the more budget-conscious collectors can theoretically obtain a pleasing AU representative, if indeed such a coin is locatable at any given time. This example is lightly circulated, but retains some luster in the recesses, and the design elements are only minimally worn. The surfaces are generally smooth, with no immediately obvious abrasions. Eye appeal is pleasing for the grade.
