Territorial Gold
1850 $5 Moffat & Co. Five Dollar, Large Eagle, MS63 PCGS. CAC. K-7a, R.4. Moffat & Company was the most important of the early California coiners. John Little Moffat (assayer) was the senior member of the firm that included Joseph Curtis (manager), Philo Perry (cashier), and Samuel Ward (secretary). Following some time spent in the southeastern gold fields of Georgia and North Carolina, Moffat returned to New York where he gained his considerable assaying talents. Moffat and his employees traveled from New York in 1849, arriving in June with their coinage equipment.
The Large Eagle reverse die of this variety was left over from 1849, appearing here in a late die state, suggests that this variety may have been the first minted varieties in 1850. A Select Mint State example, this piece has bold details and lustrous light yellow surfaces with reflective fields. Population: 5 in 63, 1 finer (3/17).
