1883 50C Hawaii Half Dollar PR64 ANACS. The insert of the small-size ANACS holder displays the legend RUSSELL, which suggests that the present lot may have once been in the collection of Ronald Russell, co-author of the standard reference to Hawaiian numismatics. While the 1883 Hawaii business strikes were coined in San Francisco with fairly high mintages, their proof counterparts were struck in Philadelphia, and had minuscule productions. The Guide Book reports 26 proof halves were struck. This exemplary specimen displays beautiful rose-red and cobalt-blue peripheral patina. The king and coat of arms are frosty, and exhibit obvious contrast with the glassy fields. Expect strong bidder competition for this impressive and elusive specimen.
