Coins of Hawaii
1883 $1 Hawaii Dollar PR63 PCGS. With the exception of the proof-only eighth-dollar, the proof Hawaii akahi dala or dollar is the key to a complete collection of Hawaiian coinage. Just 26 proofs were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, six in September 1883 and another 20 pieces in 1884 from the same 1883-dated dies. The popularity of crown-sized types ensures that the dollar will always be subject to greater demand than its dime, quarter, and half-dollar fractional counterparts, though the mintage of 26 proofs is identical. Status as a single-year type further adds to the appeal. This well-struck specimen is brilliant aside from delicate gold patina near the rims. As an identifier, we note a small narrow tick centered above the AL in DALA. Certified in a green label holder. Population: 3 in 63, 2 finer (3/17).
