Patterns
1852 PG$1 Gold Dollar, Judd-145 Thick, Pollock-173, Low R.6 PR66 PCGS. An annular pattern with a wide opening that restricts the legends to the date, denomination, and country name. Room is found on the lower half of the reverse for a wreath ornament. Struck in gold with a plain edge. The ring dollar allowed a physically larger coin in gold than the adopted gold dollar. Examples are known in gold in both thick and thin planchets. Restrikes are also known, these pieces distinguished by a die crack to the right side of the first L in DOLLAR on the reverse. All together, approximately three dozen gold patterns are known, outnumbering the off-metal strikings -- a curious phenomenon, until one considers that most of the gold pieces are restrikes (not the case here). The surfaces are difficult to grade, as always, because of the small surface area. There is very little room available for contact marks. The piece has taken on a rich orange-gold hue.
