Patterns
1872 T$1 Commercial Dollar, Judd-1214, Pollock-1355, High R.7, PR65 Cameo NGC. William Barber's lower relief copy of James Longacre's famous Indian Princess design. Liberty is seated facing left, supporting a Liberty pole and a globe inscribed LIBERTY. Two flags are behind, one of which exhibits 13 stars. At least four of the stars are widely repunched. The reverse has UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above an olive wreath. GOD OUR TRUST is below the wreath on a scroll, and within the wreath are the legends COMMERCIAL / DOLLAR / 420 GRs / 900 FINE. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Examples of this magnificent design were struck in silver, copper, and aluminum. Of the reeded edge silver pieces, only a half dozen are estimated to exist today. One of the keys to appreciating this pattern is the word "Cameo" that is attached to the Gem grade. The contrast is profound between the frosted devices and deeply mirrored fields. Just the slightest hint of rose patina is seen over the otherwise brilliant surfaces.
From The Siegel Collection.
