Patterns
1875 T$1 Trade Dollar, Judd-1428, Pollock-1571, High R.7, PR64 NGC. Liberty by the Seashore design with a seated figure of Liberty dominating the obverse. Her left hand rests on a globe over which a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY is draped while her outstretched right hand clutches an olive branch. Thirteen stars are arranged around the border, the motto IN GOD WE TRUST is on a scroll below the portrait, and the date 1875 is at the bottom. A steamship with sails is in the distance before Liberty's portrait with the steam trailing in one direction and the sails billowed in the other. The reverse is that of the regular issue Type One Trade dollar. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. This otherwise untoned example reveals the lightest silver iridescence on the obverse. Both sides are equally sharp with pleasing field-to-device contrast that is most readily evident on the reverse. An area of disturbance in the obverse field above the steamship is noted. Only four pieces are confirmed of this aluminum pattern, and one is impounded in the Connecticut State Library.
Ex: Auction '88 (Superior, 7/1988), lot 225; Central States Signature (Heritage, 5/2003), lot 7125, where it brought $20,700.
