Patterns
1876 T$1 Commercial Dollar, Judd-1473, Pollock-1624, R.7, PR65 Red and Brown NGC. The obverse is the popular Liberty at the Seashore with a sidewheel steamer in the distance. The reverse is a Commercial dollar die which has the motto GOD OUR TRUST on a scroll beneath the standard legends of weight and fineness. A wreath and cornucopia separate UNITED STATES OF AMERICA from the other legends. The reverse die was used to strike patterns dated 1871, and has to be considered a mule with an 1876 obverse, since Trade dollar was the preferred term instead of Commercial dollar by 1873. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Struck in small numbers and in only two metals, silver and copper. Four or five copper pieces are believed known. The fields are remarkably bright and reflective, serving to highlight the pale lilac and reddish toning that covers each side. Complete strike details in all areas.
