Patterns
1885 $1 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1747, Pollock-1959, Low R.6, PR65 NGC. The regular proof issue obverse and reverse of the Morgan silver dollar. Struck in silver with a lettered edge. This pattern and the next two were produced with experimental lettered edges made by a three-part collar: * * * * E * / PLURIBUS * / UNUM * * * * *. The tripartite collar was used to strike these experimental dollars in 1885, but apparently the institutional memory of the Philadelphia Mint had faded by the time Augustus Saint-Gaudens required a three-part collar to strike the edge of his High Relief twenties in 1907. Thus, the wheel had to be reinvented 22 years after the "Snowden Dollars" were struck. This is a richly toned example with deep blue-green and rose toning with brightly reflective mirrors in the fields.
From The Siegel Collection.
