Betts Medals
1596 Dutch Colonies in India, Brazil, and Saint Thomas AU50 PCGS. Betts-16. Silver, 55 mm., Medal turn. Hebrew JEHOVAH in the clouds over a port city on the horizon, the sea god Neptune rides a sea monster in the foreground, with the Latin legend "May Neptune's Kingdoms Prosper under Fortunate Stars." The reverse presents the Arms of Frisia surrounded by small shields and the names of seven Dutch port cities: Alckmaar, Hoorn, Enckhuysen, Medemblick, Edam, Monickendam, and Purmerend. This rare and important medal, comparable to the rare multiple thalers of the era, shows signs of double striking as usual to bring up the design definition. Finer than either of the examples in our offering of the John W. Adams collection, this piece has bold details and natural pewter-gray surfaces with delicate peripheral steel-blue tones.
