Morgan Dollars
1878-S $1 MS67 NGC. The inaugural San Francisco issue of the "Bland dollar," the 1878-S Morgan, is a common date in most Mint State grades, but Superb Gems are conditionally scarce. Prooflike and Deep Mirror Prooflike examples become uncollectibly rare for most enthusiasts at the MS66 level, making non-reflective coins the only reasonable option in the higher numeric levels. Even so, this MS67 is distinctly prooflike on the obverse with stark cameo contrast, and on the reverse has semiprooflike fields with less contrast. Both sides are sharp and exceptionally well preserved with no mentionable toning. The 1878-S Morgan is just not seen this nice with any degree of frequency. Census: 34 in 67 (5 in 67 ★), 0 finer (3/17).
