Morgan Dollars
1879-CC $1 Capped Die, VAM-3, MS61 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. An important example of the Capped Die variety, essentially a recut mintmark variety. An attempt to remove the original mintmark left numerous depressions in the die (raised marks on the coin). Some past numismatist dubbed this the Capped Die reverse, a name that took hold and remains in use today. This example is heavily abraded, yet it has excellent mint frost with attractive iridescent luster inside the obverse border, and fully brilliant reverse luster. Housed in a green label holder.
Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2006), lot 3237.
