Morgan Dollars
1887 $1 Donkey Tail, VAM-25A, MS63 PCGS. A Top 100 Variety. Formerly listed as VAM-1A, as indicated on the holder. The variety was discovered by George Mallis in July 1964. Surprisingly few high-grade examples of this popular variety have surfaced. The die break at the bottom of the D in DOLLAR forms a lump that resembles a donkey's tail. According to the VAMWorld website, "It is possible to cherry pick these coins and they are often found in VF-XF condition. AU coins are very tough to find. Mint state Donkey Tails are truly ultra rare!" The surfaces of this piece are brilliant and exhibit satiny mint luster with fewer scuffs than one would expect for the grade. The strike is weak on the central devices.
Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2014), lot 5319.
