1888-O $1 Scarface, VAM-1B4, High R.6, MS60 PCGS. Scarface, a Top 100 Variety. VAMworld.com identifies four die stages for the famous 1888-O Scarface variety, but it is only the VAM-1B4 that is truly the Al Capone of the die marriage. Struck from a near-terminal die break state of the obverse, a massive die crack cuts across Liberty's cheek and terminates in the lower hair. Originating from the dentils, the crack crosses the dot between E and PLURIBUS where it forms lumps at the dot, then continues across the left field and portrait to create a biplanar "tilted" surface. VAMworld.com notes, "Typically found in baggy MS, most scarface coins apparently didn't circulate." Such is the case with this MS60 example, with numerous abrasions beneath pale golden-gray toning. The late die stage VAM-1B4 is extremely popular and desirable with both VAM enthusiasts and major variety collectors.
