The San Francisco Mint maintained a high level of production quality during this period, explaining the prevalence of strongly defined Prooflike dollars through MS65. The 1897-S begins to pose a serious challenge in MS66, however. Exceptionally preserved fields display marked reflectivity, contrasting boldly against razor-sharp, partly frosted devices.
