Peace Dollars
1921 $1 MS66 PCGS. Ex: Ward T. Miller, Jr. Struck in the final days of 1921, the new Peace dollar design created a stir with the public, but only briefly so. Long lines initially forced Treasury officials to limit distribution to the public at one coin each, but soon there was an abundance of coins in Mint storage and at local banks. Struck in high relief, the 1921 Peace dollars vary greatly in their sharpness and surface quality. This Premium Gem example is satiny and lustrous with vibrant silver sheen that dominates both sides. Faint gold toning seeks a foothold, but is limited to a thin dusting and microscopic hue. The Mint struggled to maintain sharpness of the strike, although this example is well-struck with only slight weakness in the hair strands covering the ear. PCGS reports just seven numerically finer examples. Population: 181 in 66 (2 in 66+), 7 finer (3/17).
