Coins of Hawaii
1871 12.5C Wailuku Plantation 12 1/2 Cents, Broad Starfish, VF20 PCGS. Medcalf 2TE-3. The better "Broad Starfish" variety of this popular Wailuku Plantation token. Hawaiian Sugar cane plantations of the 1870s and 1880s dealt with a shortage of Spanish-American silver by striking their own tokens, typically with real or half-real denominations. All are rare today. The present example is evenly struck except for weakness on the 8 in the date. Chiefly golden-brown with glimpses of gray and mahogany in design recesses. No marks are apparent. Listed on page 421 of the 2017 Guide Book.
