The crystalline nature of the olive-green native gold -- attached to its original hard-rock host -- has a reef-like appearance, encircling the gray-white matrix in an artful embrace. So-called "reef" gold is the precious metal in its primary state, as opposed to nuggets that are usually heavily eroded and weathered pieces of primary reef gold.
