1865 5C Shield Five Cents, Judd-417, Pollock-489, R.7, PR63 Red PCGS. The obverse is the adopted design of 1866, but dated 1865. The reverse is the "Stars and Bars" design used in 1866 and on some 1867 nickels. Struck in copper with a plain edge. An in-depth analysis is presented for this issue on the USPatterns.com website. It is not a simple matter to say these were all restrikes made at a later date for collectors (as is true for so many other patterns). Some of the copper pieces (including this one) have the same prominent center dot as seen on all nickel 1866 proofs. Dave Bowers has found a bill dated May 19, 1866 that shows the Mint paying Mr. S.E. Adamson $2 for a large #5 punch. If that was the punch used on these patterns they couldn't have been made before mid-1866. This interesting piece displays bright red surfaces with a touch of yellow interspersed. A number of small flecks of carbon are seen on both obverse and reverse. Sharply, but not fully struck, as one would expect from this design type.
