1868 5C Five Cents, Judd-632, Pollock-702, High R.7, PR64 Brown NGC. This rare pattern was an attempt to unify the designs of the two nickel alloy denominations. The obverse bears a strong resemblance to the three cent nickel, except in larger format. The reverse features a large Roman V within a wreath, similar to the later Liberty nickel, but the wreath is larger and there are no peripheral legends. A six-pointed star and scrollwork tops the wreath. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Blended sea-green and chestnut colors grace this fully struck near-Gem. An occasional minute spot does not distract.
