1869 5C Five Cents, Judd-683, Pollock-762, Low R.7, PR65 PCGS. Ex: HW Bass Collection. The obverse resembles the adopted three cent nickel design on a larger planchet, of course. The reverse displays a large V over a wide ornamented frame, IN GOD WE TRUST is above in tiny letters. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Brilliant throughout and impressively mirrored for a nickel striking. The centers show softness of detail, either from die opposition or the hardness of the nickel composition, or both. Fewer than a dozen examples are believed known of this pattern. The present coin is tied with one other as the finest non-Cameo at PCGS; a single Cameo is reported by that service in PR64 (3/17).
