1870 H10C Standard Silver Half Dime, Judd-809, Pollock-897, Low R.7, PR67 NGC. CAC. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection. William Barber's Seated Liberty design is paired with a familiar Standard Silver reverse motif, a wreath of corn and cotton and 5 CENTS in the center. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. The small physical size of the five cent pattern resulted in slight differences in the design. The cap on the pole resembles a large number 2, for example. The ribbon ends in a single tail distant from the U in UNITED, rather than the double tail below UN on the larger denomination patterns. This beautifully toned and well-pedigreed example displays rich ocean-blue and straw-gold shades. The strike is full and there are no detractions. NGC and PCGS have certified 10 specimens of Judd-809, and the present piece is the single finest among those by two grades (3/17).
