Patterns
1871 $1 Standard Silver Dollar, Judd-1133, Pollock-1270, High R.6, PR64 PCGS. A dollar pattern with Longacre's modified design with only 13 stars on the flag and the first and thirteenth peripheral stars closer to the base. The reverse has 1 DOLLAR as the central design element which is surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, and the word STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. When James Longacre died on New Year's Day 1869, he left a considerable backlog of unused designs. William Barber used many of them, including this popular Indian Princess design. More than a dozen silver pieces are confirmed, according to USPatterns.com, yet only three plain edge silver pieces are known. Examples are also known in copper and aluminum -- both reeded and plain edges. Each side shows dusky gray patina with bright blue toning scattered around the margins. The underlying proof mirrors appear subdued at first, but when angled just so beneath a light they flash brightly through the toning. Fully struck throughout.
From The Siegel Collection.
