1878 $1 Dollar, Judd-1555, Pollock-1734, R.7, PR65 Red PCGS. Ex: HW Bass, Jr. Collection. The head of Liberty is large and faces left with IN GOD WE TRUST at the top and the date below. Similar to the pattern fifty dollar gold pieces from 1877. The reverse has a spread winged eagle with E PLURIBUS UNUM in gothic lettering above. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is at the top and ONE DOLLAR on the bottom rim. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. The crimson-orange surfaces reveal modest reflectivity in the fields and brighter lilac undertones. A scarce pattern, and especially desirable with full red mint luster.
Ex: Julian Leidman; Harry W. Bass, Jr. (July 28, 1972); Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection (Bowers & Merena, 5/1999), lot 1281, where it realized $6,555; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2001), lot 8556, where it realized $8,050.
