Gold Dollars
1850-O G$1 MS63 PCGS. Variety 1. The only dies identified for the 1850-O gold dollars. When California gold made its way to the New Orleans Mint, production of double eagles was a priority, being the least expensive denomination to produce in relation to its face value. While the Louisiana facility produced 141,000 of the large double eagles, they only coined 14,000 gold dollars and 57,500 gold eagles. Only a few of the small gold dollars survive today in Mint State grades. PCGS has only certified 33 submissions, and 23 of those are in MS61 or MS62 grades. This piece has frosty yellow-gold luster with bold design motifs. A few scattered marks and trivial copper spots are consistent with the grade. Population: 8 in 63, 2 finer (3/17).
