Liberty Quarter Eagles
1844-C $2 1/2 XF45 NGC. Variety 1. Doug Winter estimates that only 150 to 175 examples of the 1844-C quarter eagle are known, surviving from a small mintage of 11,622 pieces. The date is heavily traded in XF and AU grades, although pieces grading finer than the current Choice XF coin are scarcer than the certified population reports suggest. This piece has pleasing olive-gold patina and no major abrasions. The usual strike softness is seen on the central devices. Census: 22 in 45, 73 finer (3/17).
