Liberty Quarter Eagles
1871 $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. Struck in an era of low-mintage Philadelphia gold following the Civil War, this example survives from a production of only 5,320 circulation strike quarter eagles in 1871. Few collectors could afford to keep gold coins by date in the 19th century, and those that did preferred proof coins. This Choice AU quarter eagle exhibits scattered marks on its light yellow and orange-gold surfaces with sharp design details. Population: 17 in 55, 47 finer (3/17).
