Three Dollar Gold Pieces
1857-S $3 AU55 NGC. One of the rare issues in the three dollar series, the 1857-S exists primarily in circulated grades. Even then, the number of survivors ranges from a low of just 160 pieces to a high estimate of 225 coins. This Choice About Uncirculated example is a grade that is sometimes equaled but seldom surpassed in one of our auctions. Bright and attractive orange-gold color retains considerable mint luster. The strike is sharp in spite of brief wear. We note light abrasions in the fields and a single faint scratch at the top of the wreath. Just 14,000 pieces were struck, and apparently none were saved. Census: 32 in 55, 13 finer (3/17).
